Jirds like to chew… A lot!

September 26th, 2009 by Wyss

The Jirds are mainly nocturnal, but these two seem to be up and about quite regularly during the day – unlike Xia where we would rarely ever see her during the day… Perhaps it was a Shawi Isis trait?

Anyway, this morning the Girlies were up to greet me as they are pretty much every morning, I always blow into their tank so they know it’s me, their little noses sniff the air and usually curiosity gets the better of them and up they come to the topper to ‘see’ me.

Yes, so they’re nuts on chewing and I’m unsure if I can afford £10 for some hamster steps every month or so… Ha ha, I think it’s because it’s softwood that they’re getting through it so quickly too, but they do manage to chew the fiddlesticks bridges quickly too and they’re hardwood!

Jird teeth are big! Gerbil bites hurt… Well Jirds hurt more and their teeth are much longer… Fair enough I’ve only ever been bitten by a Gerbil  I believe on three occasions, and by a Jird twice. Xia bit me once – very nest territorial, she’d run out bite and be off before you could blink! The other was by Aimee, I was holding her and Anisa began thumping and she freaked out and latched on to my hand. That was fun! Could’ve been nasty too, had she hit a nerve! As it was she got the bone of my hand – not finger so the bite wasn’t too deep.
