My first pair was Bacon (Golden Agouti) and Snowdrop (PEW). This is the only photo I have of them, and as you can see I hadn’t quite gotten the hang of flash! This was back in ye olde days when digicams were still fairly new.
Snowdrop died after a sudden and severe R.I, and Bacon died exactly a week later.
Second pair, Raven (Black) and Pepper (Patched Nutmeg)
Pepper died the day before New Year’s Eve ’06, and Raven died later in the year.
My trio, Sienna (Golden Argente), Kali (Sapphire), and Kess (Colourpoint Golden Agouti).
Kali died suddenly and completely out of the blue, for unknown reasons around two years old (all that was found of her was her tail (!) early into 2007). Kess died late ’07, presumably of old age, and Sienna lasted for another year. There was a lengthy split between Sienna and Rosie in 2007 that went on for several months but didn’t work out. Sienna, the last girl in the trio, was put to sleep due to an inoperable tumour late April ’08.
Kipp (lightened DEH). My special lil’ man. Fathered two litters with Grace (below) and was a perfect dad. Helped raise litter one (Delu, Oz, Ty and Jy), and moved out with the three lads and left litter two to Grace and Delu to raise. He was exceptionally sweet and purred quite strongly when he was stroked.
Sadly passed away in ’09,
Gracie (Colourpoint Grey Agouti). Mother to ten pups, fathered by Kipp. Lived with her daughter Delu until she passed July ’08, and weighed a mere 55g at last reading. Looked almost pup-like in her size, and was completely dwarfed by Delu which are the pair’s most memorable photos!
Sadly passed on 10/10/08 from old age.
Delu (Golden Agouti), first daughter of Kipp and Grace from their first litter, and Oz (Golden Agouti), one of three boys in the first litter. The other two brothers Ty and Jy went to a new home. Oz lived with his dad Kipp and Delu stayed with her mother.
Delu was put to sleep July ’08. Oz passed away late ’07 after a series of strokes.
Manny (Golden Agouti) and Attis (Golden Agouti) from the second litter, the only two boys out of four females. The females went to new homes. The only way to really tell them apart was coat colour (Manny was Ee), body size (Attis was smaller) and ear and face shape (Attis has long ears while Manny’s were more rounded).
Manny sadly passed early ’08, and Attis passed later in the year.
Bea (Light Colourpoint Golden Agouti) and Honey (DEH).
Originally bought as a foursome with the two females below, but were seperated around a year old due to Honey vs Totty battles over the mascara. Bea’s nose became sore after the split (most likely from the stress of it) and never re-furred properly. They spent most of their time inside a bamboo tunnel asleep.
Bea sadly passed July ’08, and Honey died later in the year.
Totty (Spotted DEH) and Rosie (Spotted DEH).
Totty died at around a year and a half old, and Rosie was PTS in May 2008. She had quite the character and was extremely easy to “train” to do little tricks.
There was an attempted split between Rosie and Sienna that went on for several months but unfortunately, it didn’t work out.
Lottie (Light Colourpoint Golden Agouti) and Mya (Burmese).
These girls were extremely excitable as young’uns, and kept a lot of their pup-like qualities as adults. Although relatively shy, they both loved to clamber out onto my knees if the lid came off the tank. Mya always had a tendancy to latch onto any jewellery I had on, while Lottie always found a way down onto the floor!
Mya was sadly put to sleep due to an inoperable internal tumour 11/02/10.
Lottie was successfully introduced to Lol on 15.02.10. Lottie lived happily with Lol up until her death on 14.08.10.
Obsidian (Ob) (Black), Monty, (Burmese) Pan (Siamese) and Harpo (Siamese).
These lovely lads came into the family easter weekend 2008. They took a while to show their personalities, and in the case of Ob especially, were particularly cheeky, as the little devil banged around in their tank and chewed on the mesh cover to get my attention!
Pan was almost as bad (he originally started out as the cheekiest, hence the name); he taught Ob how to climb onto their hanging bamboo and imitated Ob chewing on the mesh occasionally, but settled as he aged. However he seemed to have nightly “heats” and attempted to mount poor Monty thinking he’s a female. Monty and Harpo were a lot more shy, prefering to dig underground than demand my attention around the clock.
Once they were older, they became a lot better behaved and I can now leave their tank lid off as I know none of them will jump out (on purpose, surprise is another matter). Ob however is still a real mummy’s boy and will sit on the shelf in the tank watching me, or waiting for me to return.
All four boys often waited on the surface of their substrate as soon as they knew I was awake to get some cereal – they learnt that first the creak of the door in the morning means I’m off to get some food!
Monty died 13/01/10 of natural causes. Pan was rehomed and died sometime between the 8-10th of October, 2010. Ob and Harpo were introduced to Siggy and Ob Jr 17.03.10. Harpo sadly died 20/11/10. Ob was found 29/12/10.
Violet (Lilac), Bonnie (Dark Eyed Honey), Astra (patched black) and Lol (Dark Eyed Honey).
These girls had to be seperated at a young age (not even at 6 months) into pairs due to brewing squabbles between Bonnie and Astra. Astra and Violet live together, and Bonnie and Lol lived together until Bonnie’s sad passing in early September ’09.
Lol was introduced to Lottie successfully 15.02.10 and they lived together happily until Lottie’s sad passing 14.08.10. Lol couldn’t bear to be without Lottie and went into a severe depression, refusing to eat and barely drinking. She was humanely put to sleep on thursday 19th of August, five days after Lottie’s death.
Tripp (patched Golden Agouti) and Cornish (Argente Cream). Cornish sadly died 18/09/10. Tripp passed on 17/11/10.
Arrived with the four females above, both are relatively skittish although Cornish is especially nervous. Tripp has the narrowest face I’ve ever seen on a gerbil! A classic ‘mouse’ gerbil. They’ve both chunked up nicely and are quite happy to come out to see you, especially if they hear food.
Rudy (Colourpoint Slate).
I couldn’t resist this little guy 12/10/08. He came to me quite skitty and shy but within two days tamed up and was bouncing all over my arms! His floppy ear seems to be a birth defect. He’s somewhat reclusive, not as friendly as some of my other gerbils but will come out for cuddles (but only when the fancy takes him!). Once he was introduced to Donnie and Benson however, he became a lot more friendlier and handleable.
Rudy was put to sleep 12/01/11 as he had suffered a severe stroke and was going downhill.
Pandora (left) and Izzie (right) (both Dark eyed Honey Cream).
These girls arrived all the way from Dundee in Scotland from our very own Indyrascal on 18.07.09!
Pandora is an absolute sweetheart, at 11/12 weeks old she was(and still is) very placid when handled and will sit on your arm quite calmly. She also loves going up onto my shoulder and sniffing the air. Izzie is a bag of energy (a typical pup basically!), she runs anywhere and everywhere, and likes to chew on my sleeves. She’s also mad enough to like heights and when my head isn’t high enough for her, she thinks the laptop screen would be a better perch, and I end up having to type through a demented gerbil trying to jump up against the screen!
Donnie (Nutmeg) and Benson (WP Slate).
These little lads joined the family 23.09.09, pairing up with Rudy, who was, for lack of a better word, absolutely thrilled. They’ve both filled out wonderfully as they’ve grown into adolescents.
Benson decided to throw down Rudy as dominant male on 13.08.10 which resulted in a blood bath, during which unfortunately I was out working! Surprisingly though, they are still living together and acting like nothing has happened, although Rudy came away worst off with a split lip, infected cheek and numerous bites.
Siegfried (Siggy) (Colourpoint Dark Eyed Honey/BEW) and Ob Junior (Junior) (Slate)
These chaps joined the family on 16/17.03.10, pairing in with Ob and Harpo after Monty’s demise and Pan’s rehoming. The older lads loved their company but did find it somewhat tiring! Rather cutely, the BEW, Siggy, loves cuddling and following Harpo, and they’re both excellent diggers, to the point of being unable to find them and panicking that they’ve gotten out or died!
Unfortunately Jr became too aggressive & bolshy for his own good around 27.07.10 and had to be removed from the other three lads, however he doesn’t seem upset by it all although it left Ob feeling rather upset and vulnerable as he was attacked and bitten a few times.

Rudolph(Dilute Golden Agouti) and Roscoe(Dd Nutmeg)
These chappies came to live with Ob and Siggy a few months before Ob’s sad passing. They’re well suited to living with Siggy as both are extremely shy! Roo in particular is rarely seen, but being a teeny tiny gerbil must help.
