Gerbil Care

The other day I had an American gerbil owner comment to me about how the vets in the states are basically a profiteering business nowadays, rather than actually caring for the animals they deal with day in and day out. She also mentioned about home euthanasia, which many show mice and rat owners will be familiar with.

I’m vaguely familiar with this subject as some of you know, I own a show mouse from a show breeder. When I collected him I was able to have a chat to the breeder about her method and the controversy of it in the mouse and rat showing world.

The sun was out today, amazingly, and still more or less out when I came home from work, so it was photo time! I was initially just going to do a couple of Roddy at Rach’s request, but he was fast asleep so while I waited, I took some of the gerbie gang.

Please do be warned, this is a long post and it is brimming with photos of cute animals, I can’t be held responsible for any health or PC-related problems from viewing them!

Before you follow the jump, think on this brain-teaser: How many cheerios can one gerbil hold in his mouth? The answer will be posted soon!

Sadly, Monty passed away last night.

I noticed him looking rather weak and breathless not long after I had came into work, but he perked up for a little food and pobbled off underground into his nest.

A few hours later, I heard some strange thumping noises, which turned out to be Monty, doing some mad springing and headbutting the corner of the tank as he suffered another small stroke, and was cold and pretty unresponsive. I popped him under a towel and onto a hot water bottle, but he sadly died about an hour later.

My poor little burmey chap. :( At least I know he enjoyed all the mornings when he and his brothers got some of my cereal!

Photos after the jump..
