I am Nicki, I’m 31 years old and currently run Indy’s Rascals Gerbil Rehome with my 5 year old son, Aaron. I also work part-time at a local Nursing Home as well as tending to our own pet animals.

Myself and Aaron

We are the first (and at the moment the only) Gerbil specific rescue in Scotland, and one of only two in the whole of the UK.
My love for Gerbils started at the age of 16 when I was gifted a pair from my parents for passing my School exams. My love for them grew and I was never without a Gerbil or two from that day on.

One of my first Gerbils, “Bubbles”

I was always on the lookout for books and information on these fascinating little animals, but always found that most information said the same thing and didn’t go into much detail. I then found the wonder of the internet and joined “eGerbil Forum”. This was a huge discovery for me as there was so much in depth material on the main website for me to read and I loved it! Ed who is the admin has had many years of experience and put so much effort into research and detailing all his findings that without him I doubt many people would know what they do about Gerbils.

In the October of 2008, I had done a lot of thinking. There were species specific rescues for Rabbits, Guinea Pigs, Dogs, Cat’s, Hamsters, Rats and other animals. I discovered there was nothing in the whole of Scotland for just Gerbils, so that fact coupled with the amount of pet Gerbils suffering due to lack of proper care, is why I decided to start up our Rescue. As well as taking on unwanted/neglected animals, we pride ourselves in our aims to try and promote good ethics and care for pet Gerbils, and hopefully help people realise that just because they are small rodents it doesn’t mean they are of less “value” (as is often the case) as other, larger animals.

The Rescue is run from our home in Dundee in Scotland and we are totally self funded. We pay for all the supplies, vet visits and so on which we require to keep the Rescue up and running. It is a struggle sometimes, but we always manage to work something out.
To see which Gerbils are available for adoption, please visit the “Rehome Us” section of the website. Thank you for reading.

hey Indy! I had to leave the computer abruptly at college due to being thrown out of the art studio along with the rest of the class.. the higher students needed the space.
Anyway, i messaged you my number to your egerbil account and can message it to you on your hotmail/email if you like too.
I was wondering though, how much does it cost you to run your rescue? I’ve been adopting gerbils off gumtree a lot recently and might open up a rehome myself, with my mum’s permission of course!

Hi Hollie. If you are thinking of opening up a rehome then I suggest you do a lot of reading up on the eGerbil website first. A lot of work doing a rehome is edcuating people on the proper care and welfare of Gerbils to spread the word. Costs are variable depending on the number of Gerbils, Tanks etc and of course vet bills. Just be aware you will need to be able to organise homechecks also to ensure any Gerbils you decide to rehome go to the best suitable homes.
